🧿2. Leakage causes, failure mechanisms, and repair methods

  1. Corrosion Failure (Highest Occurrence)

    - Pitting Corrosion

    Cause: Chloride ions (Cl⁻) in water damage the stainless steel passivation film, forming localized pits that penetrate the pipe wall.

    Characteristics: Leakage points appear as small holes, with yellow-brown corrosion products (containing elements such as Fe, O, and Cl) visible on the inner wall.


    Causes: Water accumulation in the trench (e.g., weakly alkaline water with a pH of 7.6 still contains Cl⁻), seawater, and residual chlorinated water after pressure testing.

    - Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)

    Cause: The combined effects of Cl⁻ and tensile stress (e.g., residual welding stress and installation stress) induce cracks.


    High-risk Locations: Welding areas, baffle contact points, and high-temperature, high-pressure environments.

    - Electrochemical Corrosion

    Cause: Pipeline contact with stray current (e.g., broken wires) and potential differences between dissimilar metals accelerate localized corrosion.

    Characteristics: Yellow streaks (containing elements such as Na, Mg, and S) are present in the pitted corrosion area.

- Material Selection Optimization:

The outer pipe wall is coated with epoxy resin (3PE anti-corrosion layer), and the inner wall is lined with food-grade stainless steel (such as Nantong's "pipe-in-pipe" repair technology).

- Welding Control and Management:

Post-weld solution treatment is used to relieve stress, and 100% radiographic inspection of welds is performed.

- Environmental Control:

Design trenches for waterproofing and drainage, and regularly test the Cl⁻ content in the water (recommended ≤ 25 ppm).

- Leak Detection:

Install a pressure sensor and an acoustic detection system to locate small leaks in real time.
